So my latest obsession is archery. I’ve been reading and reading for the last month or so and picking the brains of the good people at The Haven. It’s unbelievably fascinating. Though I have no desire to shoot an animal, being able to is quite appealing. When the world ends archery will be a nice skill to have…

…of course shooting a rifle is probably a tad more useful… but I’d like to keep my fantasy thank you.

I’m looking forward to learning all I can about this. I’m excited, I’m even debating picking up my first bow this weekend…

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time in my room. I have a feeling that’s true for a lot of geeks. But man, I sure did spend a lot of time there. Gaming, reading, listening to the radio. I don’t exactly remember when I started listening to Don and Mike. Probably sometime in the mid 90’s after they moved to WJFK. But there was a time there where it was on my radio every day after school. They were radio gods, the could do no wrong. Everything they did was hysterical. They were paid to be entertaining, and they sure as hell were.

So today is the end of an era. Today marks the last Don and Mike show ever. Ever since Don’s wife died in 2005 I really haven’t done much listening. I’m not sure why, I just haven’t been into it. Thanks for all the laughs. I feel like I know these two strangers personally. Bah, I don’t know what else to say about it. If I can one day be half as funny as you guys, I will consider my life a success. I hope you don’t kill yourself Mike.

Ever since Gary died I’ve been reading the blog of former Stand By Me, and Star Trek TNG star Wil Wheaton. He’s a self admitted ubergeek and seemingly all around nice guy. He did the keynote address at PAX 2007 (seriously, give it a listen, it reeks of awesome on many levels). Though I hate Penny Arcade (for reasons I will discuss below) it’s for a great cause.

I’m going to be purchasing his latest book this week, I have a feeling it’s going to be a good one. I love books about reveling in being a geek. Including Commodork (the title being pretty much self-explanatory). Now that I’m back in an old school 2nd edition group, it seems fitting to read about the D&D world through the eyes of others.

So, why do I hate Penny Arcade? It’s not that I don’t think it’s funny. I do. It’s not that I think webcomics are getting out of control. They are. It’s that the main character’s fictional name, is John Gabriel. THAT MY NAME YOU BASTARDS. I… was unique. I thought my name was unique at any rate. Though its technically my first and middle name, you get the idea. But other than that, they’re a awesome bunch. Fucking name stealers.

It’s truly sad when a hero of yours dies. Unfortunately this is my second. Funny how sad I feel even though it’s someone I never met. But today March 4th, E. Gary Gygax co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons passed away. If it wasn’t for Dungeons and Dragons who knows how my life would have turned out. For better or for worse. But the impact was there nonetheless. The few times I had the chance to talk to him, he was always kind, even funny. I wrote him a raving email when the D&D Movie came out in 2000. I was so pissed off because it was absolute crap. But he took it in good humor. He raved along with me, completely washing his hands of the entire production. Even calling me his “Comrade in Gaming”. I was astounded that he even responded.

He was a man that loved his games, and was amazingly generous with his time.

Thanks Gary. You’ll be missed.
